INAFOCAM Introduces its Proposal for Teaching Performance Profile Standards

The National Institute for the Training and Preparation of Teachers (INAFOCAM), presented its Proposal for Teaching Performance Profile Standards which includes the new roles and responsibilities of teachers as one of the most important goals for improving Dominican education. INAFOCAM officials introduced the proposal at the XlV International Book Fair.


Among the most important factors cited are the criteria to become a professional teacher; the diagnostic of training needs; the construction of new criteria and curriculum framework for teacher training programs; clarity of the concept and coherence of the new mission.

The accomplishment of this objective is a task being undertaken by the National Institute for the Training and Preparation of Teachers (INAFOCAM) in coordination with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MESCYT), the Ministry of Education of the Dominican Republic (MINERD), the Salomé Ureña Superior Institute for the Training of Teachers (ISFODOSU) and the Dominican Institute for the Evaluation of Quality Education (IDEICE).


The presentation was given by Dr. Saturnino de los Santos, an INAFOCAM academic advisor who spoke at the Monsignor Francisco José Arnaiz Auditorium in the Education Ministry’s pavilion. There were invited guests at the event from public and private institutions and the Dominican education system, according to a press release from INAFOCAM’s Office of Communications.


According to Mr. De los Santos, there are various key factors in defining the profile of the professional teacher who aspires to be trained in accordance with the new educational needs that face Dominican society.  


Among the most important factors cited are the criteria to become a professional teacher; the diagnostic of training needs; the construction of new criteria and curriculum framework for teacher training programs; clarity of the concept and coherence of the new mission.


Also being taken into consideration is the concept of Initial and Continuing Training to be given to teachers as well as the articulation of methodology in areas that must be mastered by teachers during their training process.


In addition, the Proposal analyzes teachers’ professional development as a continuing training process. It also looks at characteristics of the levels, modalities and subsystems of the educational system, the requirements for periodical certification of graduates and linking the profiles with evaluations of the teachers’ performance. 


The establishment of these standards is found within the Strategic Plan for the Educational Administration 2008-2012 in keeping with Policy 6 of the Ten-Year Plan 2008-2018 which prioritizes fundamental improvement of the Initial and Continuing Teaching Training efforts currently underway.
