Third Annual Wlines 6K Challenge to Benefit Reforestation Efforts of the Yásica River Basin

Puerto Plata, April 12, 2018 – With this year’s theme – “Be a Hero: Save the Planet -” the Foundation for the Development of the Town of Pedro García (HIADPG) – situated in the north coast province of Santiago, the country’s second largest city – jointly with the program “Generating Clean Water” and Wlines are getting ready to organize the third annual marathon “The Wlines 6K Challenge,” which will take place next May 6. The goal of the marathon is to raise awareness on climate change and the destruction of local forests.

The sport event is part of the activities programmed by the “Generating Clean Water” initiative, sponsored by Puerto Plata’s Chamber of Commerce and Production, the Ministry of Energy and Mines, and the HIADPG Foundation.

This year, the Wlines 6K Challenge will bring together more than 900 athletes from all over the country who will participate in a 6K run through trails in the “with or without obstacle” modality, depending on the athlete’s preference.

In a recent press conference, organizers explained that the route will initiate from the historic Ecological Coffee Park, will pass through the Monument to the Mirabal Sisters – three sisters killed at the end of the Trujillo regime – and will end in the Butterfly Trail, situated 15 minutes from Santiago, the country’s second largest city.

They also explained that the participants will also enjoy a fun program that will include a mud race, Zumba workouts and music by a live DJ.

The funds generated by the event will go to the program “One Million Trees for the Yásica River.”  So far, some 40,000 trees have been planted around important watersheds that provide water to the region’s aqueducts.

Each participant will receive a small tree to plant during the marathon, or they can make a cash contribution to the foundation to continue its work.

Organizers also announced that during the event volunteers will provide participants with information on energy-saving techniques and how to care for the environment.

All  interested can register online at www.wlines.com.do, or in Blue Copy or  Rehalif.  Participation cost will be RD$900, which will include an official t-shirt of the even and promotional materials.

The Wlines 6K 2018 Challenge is cosponsored by Solutech, Vitasalud, Powerade, the national bank Asociación Cibao de Ahorros y Préstamos and Advertech.
