“For me it was a surprise and I feel happy and grateful that the selection jury and the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez, chose me as the National Plastic Arts Award,” said Elsa Núñez.

The artist stated that she feels honored by this recognition and, although she said that a painter does not work to receive awards, she clarified that when they do receive them they feel great satisfaction.

She was pleased with the letter of congratulations that the President of the Republic, Mr. Danilo Medina Sánchez, sent her for the well-deserved tribute, in which he also recognized her artistic career.

Núñez thanked all those who have followed her during her 50 years of uninterrupted career, which has had good and difficult times. For her, this recognition means a commitment to her audience and to her country, and it urges her to continue working and researching in the field of visual arts as she has done it so far.

To those artists who want to show a good job she suggested that they continue researching and introducing new elements in each work they exhibit.

In addition, she urged the young people that are starting or who are already working in the world of visual arts, to read a lot, research, and learn to master the drawing technique, as this is crucial for the success in this type of art.

Elsa Núñez is considered the most iconic example of the modern Dominican artist. Her work has been successfully featured in galleries, museums and cultural centers in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the United States, as well as in biennials and group exhibitions, such as the Eduardo León Jimenes Art Competition; the National Biennial of Visual Arts; the International Painting Festival of Cagnes Sur-Mer, France; the Biennial of Venice, Italy, and the Biennial of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

She graduated from the National School of Fine Arts (1962), where she was influenced by her teacher Gilberto Hernández Ortega. In 1960, Darío Suro considered her as the most important painter of her generation. Between 1970 and 1974, Núñez lived in Madrid, Spain, where she conducted graduate studies at the School of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Her stay in Europe allowed her to become acquainted and maintain a fraternal dialogue with the works of great masters such as Caravaggio, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Zurbarán, Goya and Picasso.
