The NEOARTE Art Center andthe PALAFITOS BAR,are pleased to invite to the contemporary group art exhibit “TIEMPO DEL COMICS”, atravelling exhibition by a group of artists from Santiago consisting of GEORGE HEINSEN, NELSON BATISTA, ARSENIO “SNOOPY”, WALI VIDAL, ALEXIS VALERIO, GIOVANNY PIMENTEL and JOAN VIDAL. The exhibit will open on Thursday, June 8, 2012 at 7:30 pm. For this special occasion, personalities of the world of arts and culture, as well as critics, art collectors, art connoisseurs and people sensitive to the visual arts expressions, have been invited to attendthe event, which will take place in the halls of this award-winning Regional Cultural Centre.

The exhibit is a novel experience and may be supplemented with previous works by Harold PriegoandCristian Hernández, cartoon and political-satire comic strip innovators, and other groups that have shifted comics, cartoons, and pop-art from advertising to the Dominican urban art.

“TIEMPO DEL COMICS” is a collective exhibit that showcases some 25 pieces, including drawings, paintings and art installation in which artists interpret comics according to their own experiences and from their own perspectives, which in turn impartrichness and visual variety to the works, whichare worthy of being appreciated. During this past May, this exhibit was being showcased in the Yoryi Morel Hall at the Santiago Cultural Center, where it received excellent comments from critics and visitors. And now the mocano public of the Espaillat Province, as well as other admirers of the fine arts, also will have the opportunity to enjoy it.

PlinioGrullón, Editor of Cultural Activities in Santo Domingo, has provided a critical reflection on the exhibit by recognizingthat comics are “cultural, artistic, educational and communications tools, which use graphics and texts.”

A very hot topic, which in this collective initiative, aside from the quality of the works which is reflected in these pieces, beyond the drawings, cartoons, superheroes and comic strips, reveals the concerns of their creators, their perceptions about society, raising, much like the comic strips and the pop-art, concerns about the national reality, placing the characters of the comic books and cartoons in local situations which may be ironic, satiric and utopian, utilizing a new vocabulary and new forms of interaction, each one conforming to their very personal style. Some pieces represent ordered sequences, while others are individualin the form of single comics with their own narrative, actions and deeds expressed in words or symbols at specific time periods.

Each work provides details of events that have happened at a specific time period, or which are the product of the artist’s imagination, expressedin the form of drawings, illustrations, paintings and art installations, and which provoke an aesthetic response in the viewer. The exhibit is a novel experience and may be supplemented with previous works by Harold Priego and Cristian Hernández, cartoon and political-satire comic strip innovators, and other groups that have shifted comics, cartoons, and pop-art from advertising to the Dominican urban art.

Grullón added that “This group of young artists, graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Santiago and from the School of Design in Altos de Chavón, have participated and have been recognized in art competitions, such as the National Youth Art Contest, HELVETAS and Casa de Arte of Santiago, the Eduardo León JimenesArt Contest, the International Painting Contest of Casa de Teatro, the Visual Arts Biennial at the Museum of Modern Art, among others, which represent an endorsement to their works, approaches, techniques and the development of thesepieces incorporated to the concept of the comics and the contemporary art applications. After enjoying the experience offered by the “TIEMPO DEL COMICS” at the NEOARTE-PALAFITOS of Moca, we can expect more and better works in future exhibitions, by this original art group from Santiago.”
