As part of the implementation of the National Landfill Cleanup Program, a team of technicians were certified in comprehensive solid waste management, during an event where the program’s progress and results were also presented.


The program has also trained 94 technicians from different municipalities and from the Ministry of the Environment. It has also provided technical assistance to 42 landfills as part of its cleanup process; it has gathered information on solid wasteat the national level …


The National Landfill Cleanup Program is the result of joint actions by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, along with the Board for State Reform and the Dominican Federation of Municipalities.


The German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is responsible for the program’s technical and financial assistance, including the creation of a network for Comprehensive Management of Solid Waste (RED GIRESOL for its acronym in Spanish), which currently includes the creation of a National Coordination Committee (CCN-GIRESOL for its acronym in Spanish).


The program has also trained 94 technicians from different municipalities and from the Ministry of the Environment. It has also provided technical assistance to 42 landfills as part of its cleanup process; it has gathered information on solid wasteat the national level; has geo-referenced 95% of the country’s landfills, and channeled fund management in order to implement a national plan for comprehensive solid waste management.


The event took place in the Green Room at the National Palace, where the institutions that currently make up the CCN-GIRESOL signedan inter-institutional agreement to include in the program the following institutions: the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education; the Dominican Municipal League (LMD for its acronym in Spanish); and the National Network of Businesspeople for Environmental Protection (RENAEPA for its acronym in Spanish), as these institutions have competencies in this area and their role and mission play an important part in managing the country’s solid waste.
