The Minister of the Presidency, Cesar Pina Toribio, travels to Guatemala today, to attend the International Conference in Support of the Central American Security Strategy on behalf of President Leonel Fernandez.


That same day the Minister of the Dominican Presidency will attend a luncheon offered by the President of Guatemala to the Presidents and delegations participating in the international event.


The international meeting, organized by the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SICA), is the first of its kind to be held in the region, and will take place June 22nd and 23rd. More than 10 dignitaries will participate in the event to discuss issues related to that issue.


During the opening ceremony, Álvaro Colom Caballeros, President of Guatemala, Ambassador Haroldo Rodas Melgar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of that nation, and Juan Daniel German Gurdián, SICA Secretary General will take the floor.


Later, a video on the security situation in Central America will be screened, followed by a presentation of the document “Towards a Safer Central America,” as well as reports on crime and violence in Central America, the national expenditure on security of the Central American countries, and another related to the Inter-American system and security in Central America. Guatemala, which currently holds the rotating presidency of SICA, will provide the conclusions.


Subsequently, the following presidents will speak: Felipe Calderon, Mexico; Juan Manuel Santos, Colombia; Laura Chinchilla, Costa Rica; Daniel Ortega, Nicaragua; Mauricio Funes, El Salvador; Ricardo Martinelli, Panama; Porfirio Lobo, Honduras; Deputy Prime Minister of Belize, Gaspar Vega; and the Secretary of State of the United States, Hillary Clinton, among others, as reported by the Division of Information, Press and Publicity of the Presidency.


Also, Ambassador Trinidad Jiménez, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain; Juan Daniel German Guardian, General Secretary of the Central American Integration System; and Karel de Gucht, Trade Commissioner of the European Commission.


That same day the Minister of the Dominican Presidency will attend a luncheon offered by the President of Guatemala to the Presidents and delegations participating in the international event.
