Ministry of Culture Announces Winners of Youth Poetry and Short Story Contest at the International Book Fair 2011

The Ministry of Culture, through the Board of Directors of the International Book Fair, announced the winners of the Youth Poetry and Short Story Contest at a ceremony held in the Youth Space Pavilion located inside the the fairgrounds.


The winner of the grand prize in the poetry contest was Rossalinna Benjamín Álvarez for her poem, “Manual para asesinar Narcisos” which she wrote under the pseudonym, La mano insomne (The Restless Hand).  She received a cash prize of $100,000 pesos.


Director General of the Book Fair, Alejandro Arvelo, presided over the event. He was accompanied by the writer Pedro Antonio Valdez, the executive Director and members of the selection jury.


The winner of the grand prize in the poetry contest was Rossalinna Benjamín Álvarez for her poem, “Manual para asesinar Narcisos” which she wrote under the pseudonym, La mano insomne (The Restless Hand).  She received a cash prize of $100,000 pesos.


The short story winner, with a cash prize of $75,000 pesos, went to Reynolds Emmanuel Andújar, for his story “UGDU.” He wrote under the pseudonym Emeterio.


In judging the writing for this contest, the jury took into account the stimulation and promotion of the young writers, evaluating formal aspects of their work such as management and use of language as well as the innovative characters of some texts and their relationship to new tendencies and styles. 


Honorable Mention was given to several writers, all of whom received $10,000 in cash. Those winners include: Heming Way, with a story called “Cuerpo de muñeca” (The Doll’s Body) under the pseudonym La invención del día (The Invention of the Day); Pamela Alejandra Rodríguez, with “Marta” under the pseudonym Pesadilla número 7 (Nightmare Number 7); Lady Laura Liriano Balbi, with the “Resurrection” under the pseudonym Javier Corta Bolsa; Moisés Santa Castro, with “Asignatura Pendiente” (Course Pending), and the pseudonym Orión; Ramón Vladimir Ramos Batista, with “El Espejo” (The Mirror) , under the pseudonym Frodo and Vicente Arturo Pichardo Escaño, with his “Interés” (Interest) under the pseudonym Cándido Bidó.  


The jury that selected the winning short stories was comprised of Ligia Minaya, Manuel Llibre Otero and Frank Martínez. The jurors who chose the winning poetry was comprised of Manuel García Cartagena, Frank Báez and Taty Hernández.
