“My Favorite Place” 2007 Children International Art Contest

The Santiago Agency of Children International has participated for over 15 years in this art contest in which sponsored children and youth draw under a common concept. In this opportunity the theme is “my favorite place”. The artwork is then sent to the maim office in Kansas City, to compete with other countries.

This year we counted with the support of several institutions that have made possible that our children not only learn techniques and skills, but also learn about other places for the first time. They even received very useful gifts, such as a backpack which is even more important now that the school year is about to begin.

The Santiago Senate, in the name of Mr. Francisco Dominguez Brito, Senator of the Republic for Santiago and the Coordinator Mrs. Orquidea Burgos visited the institution and agreed that “youth are the future, thus, they want to commit to children and youth and consider them as a common point”. They contributed with a check donation.

We also counted with the support of the “Centro de la Cultura” (Culture Center) where cultural displays and artistic activities take place. Through its Director, Mr. Manuel Llibre, we managed to send two of our teachers to service area 3 where the contestants had the opportunity to apply new techniques and knowledge for the contest. Mr. Llibre has also shown interest to plan other joint activities.

Gisela and Eddy are the teachers at the “Centro de la Cultura” who were with Nurys Fernandez, Service Area 3 Coordinator while the workshops were taking place. They said in several occasions: We hope to continue working with these children often. Our work should be continuous and for that we must remain partners”.

The Centro Leon (Leon Center) is another public space that facilitates the interaction between communities, associations, artists and institutions for the enjoyment of cultural and artistic activities and projects. As coordinated with the Director Mr. Rafael Emilio Yunen, the contestants participated in a guided tour of the Center which stimulated their creativity. In addition, the children received a mini-workshop organized by teachers Nelson Bautista and Eridelvis Lopez. This encounter favored the convergence of the space, actions taken, the Dominican context and the skills of everyone who attended.

However, these are not the only institutions that have helped these children participate. The Listin Diario newspaper gave a backpack to each of the 27 contestants in the third round that took place at the Leon Centro. Mrs. Milka Vargas, Regional Administrative Manager of the Listin Diario newspaper told us: “We have a great interest in supporting children and youth in our country, especially in the field of education; that was the reason for the backpacks”

In the name of our sponsored children and youth, Children International, Santiago Agency, thanks the support given, which shows the commitment of these institutions to the country’s childhood. We know that investing in our children translates into supporting the future of our country.

Finally we’d like to share some of our achievements, thanks to the generosity of people who have given us a hand.
