The concert will be open to the public on Thursday, March 27, at 8:00 PM in the Auditorium of the National Conservatory of Music in Santo Domingo.

The 22 members of the band will perform a Big Band concert, a style that became extremely popular during the “Swing Era” that spanned from the beginning of the 30’s until the end of the 40´s and has remain current up until now. The University band includes a vocalist with 3 clarinets, 1 flute, 4 saxophones, 2 trombones and 5 trumpets in its wind section that is complemented by the rhythms consisting of drums, percussion, piano, bass and guitar.

Its repertoire includes traditional jazz, such as: Tuxedo Junction, All Blues by Miles Davis; April in Paris; Chameleon by Herbie Hancock; Feels So Good by Chuck Mangione; First Circle by Pat Metheny; American Gothic; Blue Star; Green Sauce; I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter; Watermelon Ghost, and more.

Samford University in Alabama seeks to have cross-cultural experiences and to give exposure to its high standard in the arts in order to have an impact on other cultures. This includes being able to benefit countries such as ours, not only through jazz performances, but also, as is the case on this occasion, with a Philharmonic Orchestra integrated by the staff and the students of the school of music. As part of this initiative, they want to offer a little of what their students receive, such as having master-classes, lectures, and being a University with a Christian worldview, promote their values with the mere fact of the motivation that drives them. The Dominican Republic is part of a pilot project that could even serve to form alliances with related local agencies or even to become the required link for music students. Samford University in Alabama is open to engage with our country in many ways. The initial contact with the University was achieved through our Caonex Peguero and this visit is being coordinated by Gad Productions.

Event Details: The Samford University Jazz Big Band Concert
Date: Thursday, March 27
Time: 8:00 p.m.
Place: National Conservatory of music
Hall: Auditorium
Address: César Nicolás Pensón esq.
