The exhibition opened last Thursday, February 6th, and will be open to the public for three weeks on the Ancient walls of this museum located in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.

“CRONICAS URBANAS”, comprises 15 oil paintings on canvas in various formats and has been curated by noted Art critic Abil Peralta Agüero (ADCA – AICA). This is MAGDIEL TOLEDO’s first solo exhibition in Santo Domingo. He is represented in our country by the Sebelén Gallery and in Puerto Rico by the Alejandro Alfonso Group, editor of the “Latin American Art” magazine. Renowned Dominican art critic Amable López Meléndez, Chief Curator of the Museum of Modern Art, notes about the works: “A “sabor” (taste), an “aire” (air), and a loveliness attached to the traditions of satire, comic, and phantasmagoria, cuts through MAGDIEL TOLEDO’s painting. But his connection to the pictorial medium is deeply existential and the final product reveals Toledo’s unique personality in his quest for the impossible, for a “symbolic-aesthetic perfection”, that leads him to capture a visual chronicle of contemporary everyday space, where the allegorical references to characters, types, and paradigmatic social and cultural landscapes definitely put us on the brink of the absurdity and the amazement”…

WILFREDO MAGDIEL TOLEDO ORTEGA (Matanzas, Cuba, 1971), recognized as “one of the most authentic voices of contemporary Cuban painting” by Cuban specialist Nadia Chaviano Rodríguez, is a talented creator whose interest in the visual arts manifested itself from a very young age. He conducted formal studies in industrial design, but his artistic training is primarily self-taught. However, by the mid-1990s, he emerges as an independent artist with a sui generis discourse, often exhibiting at important provincial halls and national institutions, such as the National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) and the Fondo de Bienes Culturales (Cultural Goods Fund) in Havana. Since then, his work has been exhibited successfully in prestigious art galleries, museums, fairs, and art auctions in countries such as Luxembourg, ltaly, United States, Canada, Barbados, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Argentina, Mexico, and Spain.

Museo de las Casas Reales, the Ministry of Culture, and the Sebelén Gallery present the pictorial exhibition titled “CRONICAS URBANAS” by noted Cuban artist living in Miami, MAGDIEL WILFREDO TOLEDO, who has been considered a gifted creator of exceptional imagination and sensitivity by respected historians, art critics, and curators in Latin America.
