Hilma Contreras\u2019 New Book and Stories Launched at XVI International Book Fair 2013<\/STRONG>

T<\/SPAN>he General Directorate of the International Book Fair introduced \u201cEl poder de unasl\u00e1grimas y varioscuentosm\u00e1s\u201d [The Power of Tears and Several More Stories] and \u201cLa tierraest\u00e1bramando\u201d [The Earth is Howling] by the late Dominican writer Hilma Contreras<\/P>
\n

Referring to the life of Hilma Contreras, Mr. Valdez said she was a notable and enterprising woman who dedicated her life to writing. She was also the first woman to have received the National Award for Literature in 2002.<\/P>
\n

The book launch, part of the XVI International Book Fair, was presided over by the writer Pedro Antonio Valdez, executive directorof the Book Fair in charge of book launches.<\/P>
\n

Referring to the life of Hilma Contreras, Mr. Valdez said she was a notable and enterprising woman who dedicated her life to writing. She was also the first woman to have received the National Award for Literature in 2002.<\/P>
\n

He said the Ministry of Culture and the Directorate of the Book Fair are pleased to honor the name of Hilma Contreras at this 16th version of the International Book Fair.<\/P>
\n

During the book launch, students EstrellaN\u00fa\u00f1ezde la Cruz, ShayraGisselN\u00fa\u00f1ez and Leticia F\u00e9lix read one of Ms. Contreras\u2019s short stories, \u201cChorrera Abajo\u201d from \u201cEl poder de unas l\u00e1grimas y varios cuentos m\u00e1s.\u201d<\/P>
\n

\u201cIn the 1980s, Contreras was considered one of the most prominent Dominican writers of that era,\u201d said Valdez. <\/P>
\n

Hilma Contreras was born in San Pedro de Macor\u00eds on December 8, 1913. She was a prominent educator, essayist and storyteller. She collaborated with El Caribe, Hoy<\/EM>and the List\u00ednDiario<\/EM> newspapers.<\/P>
\n

She passed away on January 15, 2006<\/P>
\n
