Feria del Libro Dominicano en NY\" src=\"\/Portal\/noticias\/feria_NY_65.jpg\" width=65><\/TD><br \/>\n<TD vAlign=top width=7><BR><\/TD><br \/>\n<TD class=texto vAlign=top><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Fourth Dominican Book Fair in New York Comes to a Successful End<BR><\/STRONG><SPAN class=textoSmall>New York, 10\/08\/2010<\/SPAN><\/P><br \/>\n<P><SPAN style=\"FONT-SIZE: 35px; FONT-FAMILY: Georgia,; FONT-WEIGHT: normal; COLOR: chocolate; LETTER-SPACING: -6px; LINE-HEIGHT: 80%\">T<\/SPAN>he celebration of the 4th Dominican Book Fair in New York turned upper Manhattan into the cultural capital of the Dominican Republic on October 1, 2 &amp; 3rd with a huge turnout of the community, the sale of thousands of books and over 100 related events to choose from such as conferences, lectures, theater pieces, painting exhibitions, workshops and more than 30 book presentations by writers from the Dominican Diaspora as well as from the island.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/P><br \/>\n<P class=quote style=\"BORDER-TOP: #cccccc 1px solid; BORDER-RIGHT: #cccccc 1px solid; WIDTH: 30%; BORDER-BOTTOM: #cccccc 1px solid; FLOAT: right; PADDING-BOTTOM: 8px; PADDING-TOP: 8px; PADDING-LEFT: 8px; MARGIN: 20px; BORDER-LEFT: #cccccc 1px solid; PADDING-RIGHT: 8px; BACKGROUND-COLOR: whitesmoke\">&#8220;The presentation halls and conference rooms were totally full which demonstrates the enthusiasm readers and writers share for Dominican books,\u201d<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The event, considered to be the most important sponsored by the Dominican Ministry of Culture outside the country, is organized through the office of the Dominican Cultural Commission in the United States. It was held at the Boricua College in Upper Manhattan and dedicated to the writer, Jorge Pi\u00f1a from the Meta-Poetry Movement and co-founder of Culturarte. It is also dedicated to the artists and writers from the state of Massachusetts for their support of Dominican culture and their contributions to the diffusion and enrichment of Dominican literature.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>At the opening event held in Aaron Davis Hall at City College, Alejandro Arvelo, General Director of the International Book Fair in Santo Domingo, spoke on behalf of the Dominican Minister of Culture, Jos\u00e9 Rafael Lantigua, saying the Dominican Book Fair in New York is a unique event that was born a winner, adding that it provides a venue for the promotion of Dominican literature in the United States.<BR>&nbsp;<BR>The Dominican Cultural Commissioner in the United States, Carlos S\u00e1nchez, said he appreciated and valued the backing of the Dominican and international community which massively attended this event and enjoyed its activities. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;The presentation halls and conference rooms were totally full which demonstrates the enthusiasm readers and writers share for Dominican books,\u201d said Mr. S\u00e1nchez.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The fair opened to the public on Saturday October 2nd with a Dominican carnival and folklore show that stretched along the Boricua College promenade. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>There was a busy schedule of events at the book fair, which opened with a conference given by Dominican Culture Minister Jos\u00e9 Rafael Lantigua and called \u201cReading: A Memorable Passion.\u201d<BR>Other conferences that captured the public\u2019s attention were: \u201cReturning to a Reading of Dominican Poetry from Salom\u00e9 Ure\u00f1a to Our Days,\u201d given by Mateo Morrison, National Prize Winner for Literature in 2010; \u201cNearly a Century of Brief Dominican Narrative\u201d by Ren\u00e9 Rodr\u00edguez Soriano; \u201cMemory of the Reader,\u201d by Miguel An\u00edbal Perdomo; \u201cLa Metapoes\u00eda\u201d, by Joel Almon\u00f3 and \u201cThe Poem is Meta-Language\u201d by Jorge Pi\u00f1a, the writer being paid tribute at the Fair.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The panels also included \u201cWork of the Novelist Manuel Salvador Gautier, in Celebration of his 80th Birthday\u201d, done by the writers Jos\u00e9 Acosta, Rub\u00e9n S\u00e1nchez F\u00e9liz, Kianny Antigua, and Eduardo Lantigua; and \u201cThe Historical Memory of the Dominican Community in Washington Heights\u201d by Mary Grateraux, Cinthia Molina and Ana Ofelia Rodr\u00edguez.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The books presented at the Fair included the <EM>Diccionario de la Literatura Dominicana<\/EM>, by Franklin Guti\u00e9rrez; <EM>Una mujer de lluvia con sonrisa de rel\u00e1mpago<\/EM>, poetry by Lucila Rutinel; <EM>D\u00edas enteros para una sopa<\/EM>, by Jimmy Valdez; and <EM>Mujeres de vida alegre<\/EM>, by Ligia Minaya. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>There were also lots of activities for children at the Book Fair such as paining workshops and magic acts held in the Children\u2019s Pavilion under the watchful guidance of writer Elizabeth Balaguer. There was a special Dominican cultural event in the Mirabal Sisters Pavilion and the Artisan\u2019s Pavilion.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The Dominican Ministry of Culture participated in the Fair with an official delegation headed by Culture Minister Jos\u00e9 Rafael Lantigua accompanied by the General Director of the International Book Fair of Santo Domingo, Alejandro Arvelo; Bernarda Jorge, Deputy Minister of Creativity and Popular Participation; Mateo Morrison, Deputy Minister of Institutional Development; Enegildo Pe\u00f1a, Deputy Minister of Culture for the Northern Region; Le\u00f3n F\u00e9lix Batista, Director of the National Publishing House; Juan B\u00e1ez, Coordinator of Participation in International Book Fairs; Alcedo S\u00e1nchez, Coordinator of Mercadeo de Libros; Alexander Santana, Administration Deputy Minister; Basilio Belliard, Director of the Office of Books and Reading and Carlos Mena P\u00e9rez, Executive Assistant.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Writers who participated in the fair include Santiago Campo Guti\u00e9rrez, Fernely Lebr\u00f3n, Haffe Serulle, Franklin Guti\u00e9rrez, Ren\u00e9 Rodr\u00edguez Soriano, Miguel An\u00edbal Perdomo, Joel Almon\u00f3, Leonardo Nin, Manuel de Jes\u00fas Cuevas, Rhina Espaillat and Dinorah Coronado.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Other writers were: Eduardo Lantigua, Yrene Santos, Kianny Antigua, Di\u00f3genes Abreu, Osiris Mosquea, Karina Rieke, Ligia Minaya, Fabio Ram\u00f3n Monte de Oca, Alma Gal\u00e1n, Anastacio Jim\u00e9nez, Yvelisse Fanith, Tom\u00e1s Modesto Gal\u00e1n, Elizabeth Balaguer, Leopoldo Minaya, Luis \u00c1lvarez, among others.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The closure of the Fair took place in the events hall of the Commission with an homage to writer, Juan Rivero, one of the pioneers of Dominican literature in New York and Mateo Morrison, winner of the 2010 National Prize for Literature from the Dominican Republic, both of whom received a lot of attention and were welcomed with a musical version of their poems put on by the music and song section of the Commission, in addition to a presentation by a group of rap singers, comedians and dancers.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The \u201cKing of Merengue\u201d Jose\u00edto Mateo was also honored for his contribution to Dominican culture. He sang several of his most popular merengue songs such as, \u201cLa chiva blanca.\u201d Plaques of recognition were bestowed upon Dominican writers living in Massachusetts, the state to which this year\u2019s Fair was dedicated.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Each night of the Fair, after the organized events had ended, the Caf\u00e9 Bohemio opened its doors and hosted a variety of singers, musicians, poets and theater people.
