While attending the opening plenary session of the UN General Assembly, President Fern\u00e1ndez and Mr. Pachauri discussed how global climate change has impacted the environment. Their hour-long meeting included Presidential Secretary C\u00e9sar Pina Toribio; Environment Minister Jaime David Fern\u00e1ndez Mirabal; Omar Ram\u00edrez, Director of the President\u2019s Office on Climate Change and Dominican Ambassador to the UN, Federico Cuello. In 1999 Pachauri was appointed Director of the Board of Directors of the Indian Oil Corporation in his native India until 2003. He was the manager of the National Power Corporation, LTD and recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan award given by the Indian government. The French government has recognized Pachauri as a member of the Legion of Honor. In 2007, former US Vice President Al Gore and Pachauri shared the Nobel Peace Prize. On Tuesday, President Fern\u00e1ndez participated in the inaugural session of the United Nations Summit on Climate Change in which UN Secretary General, Ban Ki Moon, called on member countries to support the upcoming Copenhagen Summit. The UN Secretary General said all countries should commit to the success of the Copenhagen Summit where experts and world leaders will negotiate a new international climate change protocol for 2012 which will replace Kyoto.
