Government Dining Hall Program Will Invest RD$120 Million in Distributing Food for Christmas

The government, through the State-run Low Cost Dining Halls, will invest RD$120 million pesos to carry out an ambitious food program that entails 350,000 meals to be delivered to needy families during the upcoming Christmas season.

“These food deliveries will be repeated throughout the country and in the various neighborhoods where ever there are Low Cost Dining Halls…”

Government official Nicolás Calderón made the announcement during a food delivery of 1,500 meals in the Guachupita and Gualey sectors of the capital.

Calderón was acting on orders from Dominican President Leonel Fernández who instructed him, through the Low Cost Dining Halls, to deliver food to the marginalized areas around the country to fulfill the government´s “Eat First” program.

According to Calderón, President Leonel Fernández intends to participate in some of the food deliveries himself and will work jointly with the Presidential Social Plan.

“These food deliveries will be repeated throughout the country and in the various neighborhoods where ever there are Low Cost Dining Halls because President Leonel Fernández is a man who is very concerned and involved in helping the country´s poor around the country,” stated Calderón.

He went on to explain that all the products used at the Dining Halls to prepare and deliver meals are from the DR and that this is done with the goal of boosting the national economy.

Thanks to the government support of the Dining Halls, there have been major improvements in the quality and service they offer. An example of this is the Dining Hall headquarters located in Los Mina which has noted an increase in sales of 30,000 rations.

President Leonel Fernández is also interested is making sure that those citizens who have suffered from natural causes, tropical storms and subsequent flooding, would not go without the necessary food. Flooding affected the capital and Province of Santo Domingo as well as dozens of cities and provinces around the country.

For that reason, Calderón has provided raw and cooked food to residents of San José de Ocoa, Puerto Plata, Santiago, La Vega, Nagua, San Cristóbal, Azua, Barahona, Baní, El Seibo, Hato Mayor and Samaná, among other cities.
