The president, during a ceremony held in the Council Hall of the National Palace, emphasized the importance of the recent formation of the National Council for the Dominican Communities Abroad and the law that created it. President Fern\u00e1ndez said the law that created CODEX was approved by Congress and promulgated by the Executive Office.
\u201cFrom here we, in the Dominican Republic, regard the Dominican community abroad as a substantial part of the nation,\u201d according to a press release from the Presidential Office of Information, Press and Publicity.
He pointed out two important aspects of the Dominican Diaspora that have to do with the country\u2019s development. The first is that Dominicans living abroad represent 10% of the national population and secondly, this community sends home some $3 billion dollars annually which represents 12% of the gross national product of the Dominican Republic.
In that order, the head of state confirmed the importance of the close relationship between national development and the Dominican Diaspora. He added that the country\u2019s status and participation in the global activities has much to do with the links between its citizens abroad and those in the country.
