Twenty One Million Dollars Earmarked to Clean Up 7 Beaches <\/SPAN><\/STRONG><\/DIV>

The Dominican Secretary of State for Tourism has announced that in February the second phase of a beach rehabilitation plan will get underway in the provinces of San Cristobal, Barahona and Montecristi with a $21 million investment. <\/SPAN><\/DIV>

In 2006, the beaches in Juan Dolio, San Pedro de Macor\u00eds, Long Beach, Cabarete and Playa Dorada in Puerto Plata were rehabilitated. This second phase seeks \u201cto provide the communities near the public beaches with adequate conditions to be able to development tourism and real estate endeavors in these regions,\u201d said Radham\u00e9s Mart\u00ednez, technical undersecretary, in a bulletin sent by the Secretariat of Tourism.   <\/SPAN><\/DIV>

A total of seven beaches are to be included in this upcoming project: Palenque and Najayo, in San Crist\u00f3bal; San Rafael and Quema\u00edto, in Barahona; Caleta, in La Romana, and the beaches of the Costa Verde and Juan de Bola\u00f1os in Montecristi.<\/SPAN><\/DIV>

The rehabilitation project of these seven beaches will take between 45 and 60 days, during which time around a million cubic meters of sand will be dumped along the shores. The results of the sand replacement are expected to last approximately five years as the wind and waves will, little by little, carry the sand out to sea once again. <\/SPAN><\/DIV>
