<\/a>In 2005, during\u00a0Leonel Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s time in office\u00a0and with an investment of more than $700 million, work began for the construction of the first urban underground system in Santo Domingo and in the Dominican Republic.<\/p>\nOn February 27, 2008 the\u00a0first official route successfully took place with the presence of Dominican authorities and with\u00a0advice and supervision from\u00a0technicians from the Metro in Madrid.<\/p>\n
The Santo Domingo Metro has two lines and 30 stations in service, covering a total area of 48.5 kilometers (Line\u00a01: 14.5km – Line\u00a02: 34km).<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Oficina de Reordenamiento del Transporte (OPRET)\u00a0is\u00a0responsible for the management of the Santo Domingo Metro.<\/p>\n
