Communication and Transportation

Within the Latin American context, the Dominican Republic has a very advanced telecommunications system. The country relishes in many technological advances in the field of communications, including residential landlines and cellphones, fax, Internet access (including 2G, 3G, 4G, fiber optic broadband, wireless and Wi-Fi), and frame relay interconnection networks for commercial purposes, among others. In terms of transportation, the country has noticeably improved its infrastructure. Currently, thousands of kilometers of highways and railways, as well as various seaports and national and international airports account for these improvements.

The Instituto Dominicano de las Telecomunicaciones (INDOTEL), created by the General Telecommunication Law No. 153-98, is the state agency that regulates and manages the development of the telecommunications market in the Dominican Republic. Its mission is to regulate and promote free, fair, and competent telecommunications services for the benefit of society.

The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is in charge of planning, projecting, constructing, and adequately preserving public works that are necessary for the sustainable economic growth of the country. The MOPC ensures that these public works are used in a quality and secure atmosphere that respects the environment by implementing modern management systems and technology.
