The Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States held the awards ceremony for the 1st ‘Light and Movement’ Short Films Festival, which took place on September 27 and 28, 2014 at the Cinema Pavilion of the 8th Dominican Book Fair in New York.

The Best Short Film Award was presented to Freddy Dominí Alcántara, for the short film “Five more”, which addresses the meaning of friendship. He received a trophy and a cash prize of US$2,000.

The ‘Light and Movement’ Short Films Festival also awarded three Honorable Mentions: to Yanilis Perez, a Dominican residing in London, England, for the short film “Techos Rotos” (Broken Roofs), and to the Dominicans living in New York Nelson Peña, for the short film “Dog”, and Esteban Veras, for the short film “Intervalo” (Interval).

The Commissioner of Culture, Mr. Carlos Sánchez, congratulated the winners and said that these young filmmakers “are opening the door of the broad cultural management program at our institution, which in 2015 will include cinema in all its forms.”

The festival, headed by actress Mariluz Acosta, was aimed at Dominican filmmakers residing abroad.

Sánchez said that every year the fair’s Cinema Pavilion is enhanced by the participation of distinguished professionals of the seventh art, “and the goal of this year’s short film festival was to bring to the Dominican and Latino communities residing in the United States, quality, education and entertainment through film, in addition to bringing closer to the community producers and film stars who, with their talent and dedication, raise the Dominican flag up high.”
