With an analysis of Hispanic-American literature and poetry readings concluded the “Get-together of International Writers”, held as part of a gala dinner hosted by the Ministry of Culture (MINC) in honor of the participating delegations of national and foreign writers.

The international event took place as part of an extensive program of activities, which included, as its central theme, the lecture entitled “Hispanic-American literature in the context of the centennials”, as a posthumous tribute to writers and poets Julio Cortázar, Octavio Paz, Julia de Burgos and Nicanor Parra. The lecture was delivered by Argentinian writer Alicia Borinsky. The cultural event, held from Friday, October 3rd to Sunday, October 5th, was organized by the Foundation of Cultural Spaces and sponsored by several institutions, including the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo, on the 476th anniversary of its establishment.

Minister José Antonio Rodríguez, representing the MINC, chaired the closing ceremony, which was held at the Museo de las Casas Reales. He was accompanied by poets Tony Raful, José Mármol, Mateo Morrison and Federico Jóvine Bermúdez, from the organizing committee; and by Rafal Nino Feliz, Vice President of the organizing committee and Vice Rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo. Writer José Mármol delivered the closing remarks in which he indicated that this year, throughout all of Latin America, this important event is being celebrated in honor of these four writers of Hispanic-American literature, and that the Dominican Republic could not stay on the sidelines of these celebrations.

He thanked the delegation of international writers for their efforts to publicly showcase the works of the honorees, as well as the multi-generational national writers, and all literature lovers, who answered the call of the organizers. Likewise, he highlighted the support received from the cultural and bank institutions, and the diplomatic missions that sponsored the event. At the conclusion of the event he said that, once again, it is evident that literature has the virtue of connecting the peoples and bringing writers, researchers and academics from different latitudes and different schools of thoughts closer together in a free, fair and fertile dialogue.

In turn, writer María Ángeles Pérez López, from Spain, said that the works and thoughts of the honorees were showcased in a very cleverly thought-out way by the participating writers during the course of the event.

The following writers participated in the closing ceremony: Alinaluz Santiago Torres, from Puerto Rico; María Ángeles Pérez López, from Spain; Virgilio López Lemus, from Cuba; Yanko González Cangas, from Chile; Alicia Borinsky, from Argentina; Jacobo Sefani, from Mexico, and José Mármol, Valentín Amaro, Tomás Castro, María Palitachi, and Carlos Mieses, from the Dominican Republic. Before dinner, the delegation of writers read poems alluding to the life, literary works and literary thoughts of the honorees. After the conclusion of the opening ceremony, which took place on Friday, October 3rd, there was a series of lectures and poetry readings that included the poem “Paisaje con un merengue al fondo”, by Franklin Mieses, which was read by writer Yanela Hernández. The program on Saturday, October 4th, included exhibitions of the works of Julio Cortázar and Julia de Burgos, at the National Library.
