The Ministry of Culture and the Alcázar de Colón Museum successfully presented the “Dominican Bolero on the Alcázar de Colón” in the framework of the “Long Night of the Museums Summer Edition 2014”.

The opening of the activity included an artisanal exhibition and a parade of colonial and period characters. The Director of the Museum, Raysa Astacio, said that dancer Patricia Ascuasiati’s performance, which included a dance and a song, was “a tribute to our beloved Sonia Silvestre, gone before her time and who greatly influenced music in our country”, was the highlight of the closing ceremony.

“Cayenart”, an artistic piece by Yazmín Guerrero, with its artisanal mahogany engravings and other patriotic illustrations on wood, participated in an exposition presenting important Dominican artists. In addition, a children’s activity featured a tasting of Dominican artisanal candies provided by the sponsors.

The theater category started the historical process of the Dominican Bolero, with the contribution of performances such as “El compositor viaja en el tiempo (The Composer Travels Through Time)”, and a criolla performance by the children of the Libre de Azua School, directed by teacher and dancer Starling Díaz, alongside their guest performer Fausto Cepeda, a lyrical singer.

Saxophonist Sandy Gabriel led a concert of famous boleros from the 1970’s to 1989. Other performances included the Giuseppe band that played contemporary international boleros. All these performances were staged in a colonial setting.

The closing performance for the night was the “Después de aquellos boleros (After those Boleros)” show, produced by Ascuasiati, where the tribute to Sonia Silvestre’s career and her contribution to the bolero genre took place.
