Santo Domingo, May 15, 2014

On the occasion of the “International Day of the Museums”, on Sunday, May 18th, the Ministry of Culture will open the doors of several museums in the Colonial City, which may be visited by the Dominican family free of charge, from: 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

The Alcázar de Colón, Casa del Tostado, and Casas Reales monuments will offer guided tours and character reenactments for the enjoyment of children and adults, suitable spaces of cultural exchange where the public will be able to appreciate the history of the Dominican Republic.

The Museum of Modern Art (MAM) will also offer guided tours starting at 11:00 am. In addition, as part of the exhibition “Le Panthéon de Mercader”, featured artist José Mercader will offer a fun children’s workshop for the entire family, at 10:00 am. Admission is free.

The museum community, through the International Council of Museums (ICOM), has selected as this year’s commemorative theme “Museum collections create connections”, which aims to renew the traditional methods of participation that these historic landmarks have implemented in order to keep public interest alive.

The museums seek to rethink their traditional commitment and to find alternatives for visitors to be interested in more accessible collections, as rapporteurs of cultural heritage and the collective memory of a community.

The Ministry of Culture is making efforts to enhance the museums of the Dominican Republic, and an example of this is having each year the “Long Night of the Museums”, in their spring, summer, fall, and winter versions, generating a large and positive impact on society.

The organization invites the public to support the “International Day of the Museums” by visiting the emblematic sites of the national culture, located in the Colonial City, and the MAM in the Plaza de la Cultura Juan Pablo Duarte.
