As part of the program of the Guest of Honor Country at this great event, he highlighted an important conference, organized by former Panamanian President, Dr. Arístides Royo.

A large delegation made of dozens of writers and artists of the visual arts, dance, and music, among other disciplines, will visit the Dominican Republic to participate in the XVII International Book Fair of Santo Domingo 2014.

This was announced by the Ambassador of Panama in the country, Alberto Magno Castillero Pinilla, who expressed the enthusiasm felt in Panama as a result due to its selection as Guest of Honor Country of this great cultural event.

“We are very pleased with the news. I believe that our participation in previous editions of the Dominican book fair and the affinity between the two countries has given us the distinction of being chosen as Guest of Honor Country to show the public the richness of our culture”, he said.

During an interview with the Ministry of Culture, which will be published in the sixth edition of the MiCultura newspaper, Castillero Pinilla also reported that there will be activities alluding to the centennial celebration of the Panama Canal, as part of the programming presented by Panama at the fair.

Among them, he cited an important conference by Dr. Arístides Royo, a former President of that nation and one of the negotiators of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties.

The National Institute of Culture of Panama, jointly with the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, is the coordinating entity for all matters related to the Panamanian participation in the event.

“In my view, the Book Fair of Santo Domingo is the largest cultural event in the Caribbean and Central America, which is the reason why we believe that it is the perfect setting for our artists to be known beyond the borders of Panama” said the Diplomat.

Other activities

Photographs of the Panama Canal will be exhibited in the Guest of Honor Country pavilion, and the Dominican Film Archives will screen documentaries on it.

Other activities included in the program are the participation of the Folkloric Ballet of Panama, a group that will offer artistic performances in the fairgrounds. Its members will dress the traditional skirt, their traditional hand-made costume made by Panamanian artisans.

“Six indigenous ethnic groups that maintain customs from pre-Columbian times, live in Panama. The most colorful are the Kuna Indians and we will have the presence of a native Kuna photographer, who will exhibit her creations in the FIL”, said the Panamanian Ambassador.
Interventions by Panamanian decimeros, who will improvise on stage to the rhythm of violin and guitar, will be some of the attractions that Panama will bring to the XVII Book Fair of Santo Domingo.
