On March 2nd, 2014, the Advisory Council for Dominicans in Canada (CCPDE – Consejo Consultivo para los Dominicanos en Canadá), organized the first children’s drawing competition to celebrate a very significant event, the “170th anniversary of the Dominican independence”. The event had the privilege to include the following members of the jury: Ramón Gutiérrez, painter; Miguel Martes, painter; Odalisa De Gutiérrez, specialist in child education; and, Lucy Pino, painter.

52 children between the ages of 6 and 17 years had the opportunity to participate in the 1st Children’s Drawing Competition “Así es mi país” (This is my country) which was intended for children to express, through drawings, what the Dominican Republic means to them and how we can connect them with its history, its culture, its art, its natural wealth, its people, its cuisine, its traditional festivals and any other topic related to the Dominican Republic.

Juan Francisco de Jesús, President of CCPDE Canada, spoke of the importance of promoting the patriotic values of the Dominican Republic, and its customs and culture, through art. This allows children who have been born in Canada to learn more about the Dominican Republic.

We want to thank the House of Representatives and our Overseas Representative, Alfredo Rodríguez, for making possible this awards ceremony with their collaboration. Our thanks also go to Ramiro Espino, Vice President of Condex Dominican Republic, because, through his office, we were able to admire handicrafts, traditional musical instruments and costumes, among others.

We also thank entrepreneurs Kiko Muffler, El Gallo Muffler and Pneu Jarry, the Dominican-Canadian Foundation, and Fondation Quisqueya pour les enfants.

The entire team of CCPDE Canada: Juan Francisco de Jesús, Ricardo Reinoso, Miguel Almanzar, Zoraida Cuevas, Arsenio Abreu, Alexandra Regalado, Ramón Gutiérrez, and Alipio Bencosme, are grateful to all who helped make this 1st children’s drawing contest possible for young Dominicans in Canada.

In addition, they inform that they will continue to develop initiatives such as this one to spread the sense of love for our country and family unity. CCPDE Canada will consolidate all participating drawings into a 2015 calendar.
