The UNA-SNY Young Professionals invite you to attend: Turning Point: The End of U.S. Colonialism in Puerto Rico?

n what hasn’t been exercised in more than a decade unfolded this past U.S. presidential election in November. An astounding 1.8 million Puerto Ricans in the island cast their ballot in a nonbinding referendum – 54 percent voted against the current “commonwealth” status.

What message does the vote send to Washington? What would statehood mean for education, healthcare, levy and employment? Will the Obama administration seek to evolve the discussion? Find out on June 13 at “Turning Point: The End of U.S. Colonialism in Puerto Rico?”

  • Ismael Betancourt Jr., President and CEO Institute for Multicultural Communications Cooperation and Development, Inc.  
  • Olga Sanabria, Executive Secretary and Committee for Puerto Rico’s representative at the United Nations, and Adjunct Professor of Puerto Rican Studies and History of the Dominican Republic, Borough of Manhattan Community College
  • Antonio Nadal, Professor and Deputy Chairperson of the Department of Puerto Rican and Latino Studies and co-coordinator of the Caribbean Studies Program at Brooklyn College
  • Edwin Meléndez, Professor of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter College and the Director of the Center for Puerto Rican Studies
