The Cultural Center of Spain is hosting Tony Capellán’s exhibition, “Flotando,” until March 10.

“The material is full of history that offers an unexpected focus. They are also part of lives that were unexpectedly lost along with these objects when the flood waters rushed into their precarious homes and dragged everything with them.”

“Flotando” is a collection of work that forms part of a group of installations done by Capellán in the past two years in the workshop, an attic across from Independence Park, where he lived for more than twenty years.

“Flotando, as the title suggests, is the way the materials used in the artwork were found and collected along the shores and twists and turns leading from the Ozama River and slowly down the mountain to the Caribbean Sea where the materials are gently deposited on the beaches in the city. This is how these materials end up in my hands, which are endlessly collecting them and turning them into essential components of a world vision that is contained in each one of these pieces and their esthetic.
