To mark the Day of St. Cecilia, Patron Saint of musicians, the Ministry of Culture will organize a musical extravaganza at Boulevard 27 de febrero. The event will take place on Thursday, November 22nd, with the participation of major music groups of the Dominican Republic.


In addition, the program includes the participation of “Banda del Barrio”, conducted by Andrés Vidal. The event will be led by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez.


The Juan Pablo DuarteYouth Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Dante Cururullo;the Jazz Band, conducted by Remi Torres; the Wind Quintet, conductedby Junior González; the Folkloric Ensemble, under the direction of Edis Sánchez; and the National Folkloric Ballet, under the direction of Wanda Camilo, are the musical groups that will delight the audience with a selected repertoirein this venue, which is located in one of the busiest streets of Santo Domingo.


In addition, the program includes the participation of “Banda del Barrio”, conducted by Andrés Vidal. The event will be led by the Minister of Culture, José Antonio Rodríguez.


In the framework of the event, which will be free of charge for the enjoyment of the public, the Ministry of Culture will recognize the work of retired teachers from the National Conservatory of Music, who, without any financial compensation, have continued to train young talents, according to a Press Release from the Ministry’sDepartment of Communications.


Dante Cururullo, Ana Margarita Silfa, Slobodan Veljkovic, Rafael González Saiz, Gladys GertrudisPérez, Bernardo Rojas and Mercedes Ariza,are the teachers who will be honored by the Ministry of Culture as “MaestrosMeritísimos” for their commitment and dedication to music.


The Day of Musiciansis celebrated on November 22nd, on the Day of St. Cecilia, the Patron Saint of musicians, the same day that individuals who have devoted their lives to this activity are to be honored.


Santa Cecilia is credited with having sung to God in her heart. History relates that it was toward the end of the Middle Ages when people began to represent the Saint playing the organ and singing. The music band of the Dominican Police force took the nameof Santa Cecilia in her honor.


Music, at its finest, has come to be considered the heart of life, the expression of love, which is always confirmed by daily experiences. Many define it as the soul of the people.
