Washington DC, April 13


E lections in the Dominican Republic, scheduled for May 20, are expected to be a closely contested. Some 6.5 million citizens will vote for President and Vice President. And, for the first time in the DR’s history, voters will also elect 8 deputies who will represent the nearly 2 million Dominicans living abroad.

Two major candidates are squaring off in this important election: Opposition PRD candidate Hipólito Mejía (President from 2000-2004) and PLD ruling party nominee, Danilo Medina, who served as chief of staff on two occasions to current President Fernandez.
