The Youth Space Pavilion of the XIV International Book Fair launched “Debajo de Este Sol,” (Under this Sun) by Jesús Cordero, Prize Winner for Youth Poetry of the 2010 Book Fair and “Vulnerable en voz alta y otros cuentos,” (Vulnerable Out Loud and Other Stories), Prize Winner for Youth Short Story of the 2010 Book Fair.


Writer Basilio Belliard, in his presentation of “Vulnerable en voz alta y otros cuentos,” said it was important that Arianna Vásquez won first prize in this contest.


Basilio Belliard, Director de Literary Management at the Ministry of Culture and Ibeth Guzmán presided over the ceremony that was attended by the writer, Manuel Salvador Gautier and the two young poets, Jesús Tellerías and Sheila Acevedo.

Writer Basilio Belliard, in his presentation of “Vulnerable en voz alta y otros cuentos,” said it was important that Arianna Vásquez won first prize in this contest. He said other winning work was given honorable mention such as the short stories “El Hombre de Mis Sueños” (The Man of My Dreams) by Johan Elaine Taveras, and “La Ida y Vuelta” (The Round Trip) by Liliam Tejeda, adding that this was one of the readings he most enjoyed.


He praised the government for providing the creative stimulus to the writers through the Ministry of Culture, which sponsors contests like the National Prizes for Literature with the goal of increasing literary activities around the entire Dominican Republic.


The young poet, Ramón Mesa, speaking about “Debajo de este sol” said that Cordero deals with poetry in an exquisite fashion with the excellent skills of poetic prose.


He spoke about his poetic world, such as his work and selfless efforts in various institutions dedicated to cultivating reading and literature. He read poem number six as part of his exhibition as well as “Debajo de este sol,” which reveals a deep level of originality.


Cordero, speaking at the ceremony, thanked the Ministry of Culture for the
publication of his work and went on to invite some of the young people present to participate in the reading of the poems and short stories to be presented there.


The Guest of Honor at this year’s Book Fair is the Vatican. The Book Fair is dedicated to Monsignor Francisco José Arnaiz and Father José Luis Sáez.
