The Dominican Republic was the guest of honor at the Quebec 2010 Carnival where the Minister of Tourism introduced the country’s Folkloric Ballet to those gathered at the Plaine d’Abraham. The Dominican dance troupe performed on the outdoor stage in sub-zero temperatures before an adoring audience which applauded wildly as they danced in the cold with their tropical costumes on.

“…Dominican Republic was also featured in the parade that took place in this city. The Dominican float was a representation of Colonial City and the First Cathedral in the Americas as part of its history and culture.”

Susana Rosa, director of the Tourism Promotion Office (OPT) in Montreal, Canada, added that, the Dominican Republic was also featured in the parade that took place in this city. The Dominican float was a representation of Colonial City and the First Cathedral in the Americas as part of its history and culture.

Ms. Rosa explained that three Dominican artists participated in the snow sculpture contest and a Dominican painter is representing the country in the biennial that is going on here in Montreal.

Tourism Minister Francisco Javier García was represented by deputy ministers Luis Simó and Tati Olmos from the departments of International Affairs and Cultural Tourism, respectively.

Rosa also reported that Canadian Tourism Minister, Nicole Menard was completely “enchanted” during the Dominican cultural presentation.

The Dominican delegation was received by Quebec’s city hall which contributed to the carnival, considered the third largest in the world and the only one to take place in the winter.

This year the Dominican Republic was the guest of honor, the first Caribbean country to ever receive this honor.
