Government Expresses Sorrow to Italian Authorities for Tragedy Provoked by Earthquake

The Dominican government expressed sympathy and solidarity on Tuesday with Italy upon news of the deaths of more than 200 people following the earthquake that hit L’Aquila, in central Italy. The quake has been classified as the deadliest to hit in recent decades.

In a message from President Leonel Fernández to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the Dominican leader said this tragedy has moved many Dominicans and has provoked an outpouring of sympathy.

“In the name of the Dominican government and people, I express our sense of solidarity and sorrow for this sad occurrence. You can count on our support and backing to assist your country in repairing the material damage and the psychological trauma caused by this earthquake,” said President Fernández in his message to Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
