City Halls around the Country Launch Gender Equality Regulations

The City Hall of the National District (ADN) released a Gender Equality Regulation that elevates the participation of women on the town hall lists, in keeping with Article 226 found in Law 176-07 with jurisdiction in the National District and municipalities around the country. Article 368 establishes that all resolutions, activities and procedures carried out in city halls must take into account gender equality and guarantee that mechanisms of representation are maintained according to the proportion of women at a rate of at least 33 percent.

In addition, it establishes that all town halls will create a permanent gender commission which will assist with all issues related to children, teenagers, the handicapped and the elderly.

The fulfillment of this Regulation, which according to Article 368 of Law 176-07, must be done under the direction of the deputy syndicate. The Regulation contains ten articles that detail the issue of gender equality and the role local governments should play to assure that they are followed and the law is carried out successfully.

The official launching of the Regulation was made public by the deputy syndicate of the National District, Alexandra Izquierdo, who affirmed that the drafting of initiatives in favor of women forms part of the Millennium Objectives of the United Nations, of which the Dominican Republic is a signatory.
