		Excursion to Caribbean’s Highest Mountain, Pico Duarte, Suspended Due to Bad Weather The Secretary for the Environment has announced the temporary suspension of traditional seasonal excursions to Pico Duarte, the highest mountain in the Antilles region (3,175 meters or 10,417 feet) due to weather conditions affecting the country at this time. According to Omar Ramirez Tejada, Secretary of State for the Environment, current weather conditions are “unfavorable for climbing” Pico Duarte, the main attraction in the Armando Bermúdez National Park. Ramírez Tejada made the announcement while visiting a hospital after a thirteen-year-old girl disappeared in a trekking excursion in the peak last Friday. After an intensive land and air search by the National Army and other emergency rescue organizations, the girl was rescued Saturday night in the Compartición area beside the José Armando Bermudez Park
