Scientists believe that more than 10,000 humpback whales visit the Dominican Republic’s waters annually.
The “Banco de la Plata” is a 3,000 km2 underwater platform. It has become the most popular humpback whales’ meeting point during the winter. Acknowledging its role as main breeding area for this type of whale worldwide, the Dominican Republic has established the “Humpback Whale Sanctuary” through the presidential decree No. 319, October 14th, 1986.
