Dominican President Leonel Fernández will oversee a meeting between his economic team and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank (WB), the Economic Commission on Latin America (ECLAC), and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The meeting is scheduled to be held at the end of July.

Topics to be discussed at the meeting include the national and international crisis in relation to the rising fuel and food prices worldwide.

The country’s business and labor sector will also participate in the meeting, according to information offered by Juan Temístocles Montás, Minister of Economy, Planning and Development. Following a meeting on Tuesday between the government’s economic team and an IMF mission, Montás told a press conference in the Orlando Martínez Hall of the National Palace that the meeting would also touch on the international situation in the face of rising food and fuel prices and how it is affecting the Dominican Republic.

In addition, once the new government of President Fernández is sworn in on August 16, broad relations with the IMF will be undertaken with the implementation of the recently-signed monitoring agreement.

Also participating at the breakfast meeting with President Fernández and the IMF team were Presidential Administrative Secretary and the Minister of Economy, Planning and Development Luis Manuel Bonetti and Juan Temístocles Montás respectively; the president of the Central Bank, Héctor Valdez Albizu and the Superintendant of Banks Rafael Camilo.

Representing the visiting delegation was IMF deputy manager Morillo Portugal and José Fajgenbaun and Pablo Nogueira also representatives of the IMF.
