Marine ecosystems

Dominican territory is influenced by marine currents and the atmospheric systems dependent upon them. 100% of the population lives less than 100 kilometers from the coast line. The Dominican Republic has 17 coastal provinces of the 31 provinces that compose its territorial division. The entire population (8.7 million) affects the marine coast area and 28%, or 2.34 million, live less than 10 kilometers from the coast.
The coastal marine ecosystems that are located in the sea area in the Dominica Republic are:

Rocky Seaboards: 41 locations, 46.18% of the seaboard, 770.4 kilometers.
Sand Dunes: 25 locations, 60.4 km2.
Beaches: 196 locations, 433.3 km2 in area.
Wetlands: 260 locations (240 lakes and 20 estuaries), 1,673.52 km2.
Mangrove swamp: various locations totaling 325.2 km2.
Marine Meadows: 55 locations, area undetermined.
Coral reefs: Up to 10m depth, 133 km2; to 30m depth, 610 km2; Dark Area >30m, 1,350 km2.
