    Francisco Comarazamy Day

    Francisco Comarazamy, A writer and journalist, he was born in San Pedro de Macorís. He worked at the following newspapers: La Opinión, Diario de Macorís, El Mundo, La Nación and El Caribe. He was the director of the Listín Diario newspaper where he’s been writing, for the past couple of decades, the column “Dominican Books.” He has received the Golden Canoabo Award; the Order of Duarte, Sánchez and Mella Award; the Bright Star of China Award and the Order of Merit from Korea. He has written the following books: “Experiences of a Journalist,” “Commentaries on Dominican Books,” “More Commentaries on Dominican Books,” and “San Pedro de Macorís. Memories.” At 100 years of age, he continues to be one of the most important commentators of Dominican literature.

    Wednesday April 23

    Abelardo Vicioso Day (in memoriam)

    Abelardo Vicioso, Poet and essayist. He was born in Santo Domingo in 1930. He was a member of the Generation of ‘48. He worked with the group “Art and Liberation” and was connected to the “Cultural Front” at the time of the war of April 1965. His poem “Yankee, Go Home” became the battle cry for the Dominican revolutionary youth movement of that time. He wrote: “The Shaken Fire,” “One Hundred Poems from an Intense Life,” “Santo Domingo in Colonial Letters,” and “The Hatero Brake in Dominican Literature.” He died in Santo Domingo in 2004.

    Rafael Chaljub Mejía Day

    Rafael Chaljub Mejía, Writer and researcher, he was born in Nagua. He is known for his constant and passionate efforts to uncover the roots of our national rhythm: the meringue. He has contributed as a columnist to various newspapers including El Nacional, El Nuevo Diario, Ultima Hora and El Caribe.

    Among his published books are: “Blow to Blow,” “La Guerrilla of Decoro”, “Cuesta Arriba”, “From Here to the Left”, “How to Go Forward?”, “Merardo Germán, a Guerrilla of Constanza Speaks”, “Before you Leave. The History of Merengue Folklore” and “Biographical Dictionary of the Restorers of the Dominican Republic.”

    Friday April 25

    Ángela Hernández Day

    Ángela Hernández, Poet, narrator and essayist. She was born in Jarabacoa. She has done important work in the area of civil rights and policies for women. Her literary work has been recognized by the National Shorty Story Award (1998), the Cole Short Story Award (2001) and the National Poetry Award (2005).  She has published short stories, novels, poems and essays. Among her books are: “Alótropos,” “To Chew a Rose,” “The Rebellion Loom,” “Stone of Sacrifice,” “The Removal of Feelings,” “Writing as an Ethical Option,” “Charamicos” and “Metaphor of a Body in Flight.”

    Lipe Collado Day

    Lipe Collado, Journalist, narrator and essayist, was born in Santo Domingo. He studied extensively the journalistic and historical work on historical topics. In 1992 he received the Fifth Centenary Prize for a Novel. His books include: “The Return of the General,” “Stories of War and Peace,” “The Cornered Ones,” “After the Wind,” “Little Sugar Soldiers,” “The Dominican Tiger,” “The Role of the Mother-in-Law in Society,” “The Public Forum in the Trujillo Era,” “The Impressive Life of a Seducer: Porfirio Ruborosa” and “Anecdotes and Cruelties of Trujillo.”

    Sunday April 27

    Ligia Minaya Day

    Ligia Minaya Belliard, Narrator and Journalist. She was born in Moca. She has worked as a columnist for the Última Hora and the Diario Libre. She has excelled in the writing of the novel and short story. In 1998 she received first prize in the Short Story Contest of the Casa de Teatro and the National Short Story Prize in 2000. Currently she lives in Denver, Colorado where she continues to have an active literary career. She has published “Words of a Woman,” “The Alley of Flowers,” “When I am Assaulted I Think of You” and “My Heart Trembles in the Shade.”

    Monday April 28

    Héctor J. Cruz Day

    Héctor J. Cruz, Journalist and author of sports literature. He is one of the main researchers of Dominican sports. He has been the sports editor of the newspapers El Sol, El Nacional and Última Hora and the assistant editor of Hoy. Currently he is sports editor of Listin. Each year he edits the “Yearbook of Winter Dominican Baseball.” He has written many books on sports including: “The Short and Fleeting Career of a Champion: The Biography of Fausto -Ceja- Rodríguez,” “Juan Marichal: His Story,” “The DR in the Central American Games” and “Dominican Baseball: Origins, Evolution and Heroes.”

    Bruno Rosario Candelier Day

    Bruno Rosario Candelier, Essayist and narrator, born in Moca. He is the director of the Dominican Language Academy and founder of the Ateneo Insular. He is one of the main promoters of literature in the country. He is well known in the literary critic’s circles. His work has been recognized with the reception of the International Prize from the Hispanic Cultural Institute for his entire body of work. He has written a number of books including: “The Occult and the Popular in Dominican Poetry,” “The Insular Imagination,” “The Creation of Mythic Poems,” “The Search for the Absolute,” and the novel, “The Dream was Cipango.”

    Avelino Stanley Day

    Avelino Stanley, Narrator, born in La Romana. In his early years of writing he was the coordinator of the Writer’s Collective of La Romana. He writes novels and short stories. In 1997, he won the National Novel Award; in 2001 he won the Without Borders Award given by the World Association of Special Education in Spain. Among his work is: “The Gun Shots,” “The Mask of Time,” “The Three Kings,” “Dance of the Llamaradas,” “Equis,” “Cathedral of the Libido,” “Dead Time,” and “At the End of the World, I’ll Go.”

    Dagoberto Tejeda Ortiz Ortiz Day

    Dagoberto Tejeda Ortiz Ortiz, Sociologist and writer, born in Baní. Professor Emeritus at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and a member of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic and the International Casa del Caribe Award of Santiago, Cuba. He is the President/Director of the Foundation for Dominican Folklore. Among his books are: “Folklore Atlas of the Dominican Republic,” “Images of Carnival 2001,” “Carnival Masks and Identity,” “Indigenousness, Carnival and National Identity,” “Introduction to Dominican Folklore for Children,” “Voodoo and Popular Dominican Religiosity,” “The Blacks of Sarandunga de Baní,” and “The Dominican Carnival: History, Tendencies and Perspectives.”

    Manuel Matos Moquete Day

    Manuel Matos Moquete, Novelist and essayist, born in Neyba. He is a university professor with lengthy achievements and recognition for his language studies. In 1983, he won the National Novel Award and in 1991 the National Pedro Henríquez Ureña University Award in the essay category. Among his work are: “In the Atascadero,” “Abyss,” “Say Goodbye to the Era,” “The Culture of Language,” “The Theoretical Discourse in Hispanic America,” “In the Spiral of the Times,” and “Caamaño: The Last Armed Hope.”

    Juan Rivero Day

    Juan Rivero, Born in Santiago, he is a poet and short story writer. He has lived in the United States for the past several decades. In 1977 he was proclaimed Poet in Residence in the Department of Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College. He formed part of the Circle of Dominican Writers of New York from which the literary magazine “Punto Siete” was born. He is one of the most appreciated writers among the Dominican Diaspora in New York. His books include: “The Book of Paloma,” “Motionless Symphony,” New York 2014 – 40 Lives in the History of a Barrio,” “The Illuminated Butterfly and Other Love Stories,” “Song Repeated,” and “La simpar andariega Mama-Uca.”

    P. Jesús Hernández Day

    P. Jesús Hernández, Born in Dévanos, Spain, he is a researcher, librarian and a priest who has lived for 25 years in the Dominican Republic. In 2007, he celebrated 50 years in the priesthood. He has worked many years at the Antillensi Salesiana Library which is a model in the country. Year after year, Father Jesús Hernández publishes a list of books the library needs so that the people who use the library have the opportunity to continue to read and enrich their lives.
