Historically, the Dominican mining sector has not been of great significance
to the domestic economy. In fact, it was the only sector to show negative growth
in 2005(its -1.7% growth rate was due to a downturn registered in the production
of nickel, marble and gypsum). Other mineral products found in the DR include
sand, marble, and gravel. Nevertheless, the mining sector holds much potential
and has been identified by the Dominican government as a potential tool for
increased socioeconomic development.
