    Santo Domingo, November 24, 2017

The varied cultural richness of the southern region of the Dominican Republic has been put on display in the Ozama Fortress in Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial during an activity organized by the Minister of Culture. The southern-focused festivities will conclude on Saturday, the 25th with a concert from noted merengue singer Kinito Méndez.

‘Cultural Expo: the South in Santo Domingo’ is being celebrated on November 23, 24, and 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Its aim is to present to the public authentic southern artisanal, dance, folklore, theatre, poetry, artistic, and gastronomic expressions.

Creative types and cultural managers from Azua, Barahona, Bahoruco, Elías Piña, Independencia, Pedernales, Peravia, San Cristóbal, San Juan de la Maguana, and San José de Ocoa are participating in the event.

In addition to the attractions laid out above, attendees will be able to participate in and attend a varied program of concerts and discussions on cultural and folklore-themed topics from the country’s southern region.

The opening ceremony was headed by Juan Morales, Vice Minister of Culture for Decentralization and Territorial Coordination. Morales was standing in for Pedro Vergés, Minister of Culture.

Morales explained that the organization of the Cultural Expo was conducted within the new model of cultural decentralization initiated by Minister Vergés, which aims to benefit all provinces of the country equally.

Additionally, Altagracia Fernández, National Director of Provinces, stated that the main objective of ‘Cultural Expo: the South in Santo Domingo’ is to show the residents of the capital “that in terms of culture, the south is well-represented.”

Representing the participating provinces were cultural directors Rosa Matos, Novelia Mateo, Xiomara Domínguez, and Bolívar Ortiz, among others.

The activity was also attended by Vice Minsters of Culture Federico Henríquez Gratereaux and Carlos Santos in addition to other government functionaries.

Activities on Saturday the 25th will begin at 9:00 a.m. Representatives from Barahona, Peravia, and Azua will participate. The day will kick off with artisanal and gastronomic displays and later transition to Margaret Sosa’s play Las suplicantes de Esquilo.

Intellectuals Freddy Javier, Fernando Casado, and Julio Cuevas will hold a colloquium during the day titled “Southern Culture.”

Additionally, artistic presentations will be held by Los Chuineros de Baní. Meanwhile, poetry and theatre will be presented from Azua and Pericombo. Ballet will also feature prominently in the event, with the Azua Folk Ballet displaying tributes to Barahona’s Casandra Damiró as well as Baní’s famed Sarandunga and Marumbia. Lastly, to end the festival on a high note, merengue singer Kinito Méndez will showcase his musical stylings in what is sure to be a memorable spectacle.
