Jazz Nights at Acropolis Celebrates World Tourism Day with Joel Rosario Quintet
    Santo Domingo, September 28, 2017

Last night, while the world celebrated World Tourism Day, a United Nations day of international observance, the musical-cultural space Jazz Nights at Acropolis joined in the celebrations, led by the musical stylings of the Joel Rosario Quintet!

The talented and charismatic saxophonist Joel Rosario took to the stage with his group; a mixture of youth and experience, to deliver an extensive repertoire of jazz, Latin jazz, and more. The crowd, which filled up the Acropolis Center’s Central Atrium, cheered and applauded the quintet’s renditions.

Before the concert started, Karla Hernández (Acropolis) and Fernando Rodríguez De Mondesert (Jazz en Dominicana) dedicated the event to World Tourism Day, which this year focused on Sustainable Tourism. The Ministry of Tourism’s (MITUR) Vice Minister and Director of Cultural Tourism, Altagracia “Tati” Corletto de Olmos, was present to accept the dedication on behalf of the Ministry.

Corletto de Olmos spoke of the MITUR’s achievements in 2017, and some of its upcoming plans. She highlighted the Ministry’s and the Cultural Tourism Department’s commitment to supporting events like these that are not only a part of tourist-cultural affairs, but which also contribute to securing Sustainable Tourism development policies in the Dominican Republic.

After her remarks had concluded, the band returned to the stage and the musical fireworks began. With Rosario on tenor saxophone, Álvaro Dinzey on piano, Daroll Méndez on bass, Otoniel Nicolás on drums, and Juan De La Cruz (Chocolate) on percussion, Mambo Inn captivated the audience and elicited rounds of applause. The quintet then transitioned to Footprints, Satin Doll, Obsession, and Nothing Personal, and closed out their first set with a rendition of Compadre Pedro Juan that brought the crowd to its feet.

In the second set, the versatile saxophonist, who has collaborated and shared stages with many musicians of different genres, and his quintet played crowd favorites such as Caricias, Watermelon Man, Oye Como Va, and Misty. Indeed, the night was full of elegant, passionate, top-notch, and well-adored jazz. And through those rhythms, World Tourism Day’s meanings rang true.
