Ministry of Culture Presides over awards for 8th International Festival of Living Statues
    Santo Domingo, September 29, 2017

With backing from the Ministry of Culture (MINC), the 8th Annual International Festival of Living Statues (FESTIVA 2017) celebrated the awarding of prizes to performance artists who exhibited a series of eye-catching individual and collective innovations to the delight and enjoyment of the general public.

Celebrated Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th in the Plaza España under the theme “Because the Street is a Stage,” the festival counted on professional and fan-based participation from Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

The festival began with words from Cultural Manager and Coordinator Guillermo Liriano Bass and Claudia Lizardo. Both referenced the fact that this street theater-focused festival is the only one of its kind in not just the Dominican Republic, but the entire Caribbean basin.

Detailed by Liriano and Lizardo, some of the objectives of the festival were to develop and promote popular and artistic cultural expression, spread the values of identity, participation, and diversity, incentivize cultural tourism, make good use of public spaces through art, and to recognize the work that participating artists have put into their craft.

Liriano stated that for the 8th year in a row, Dominicans were able to enjoy a variety of colors, art, live music, stilt walkers, face painters, circus shows, artisanal beverages, and most of all, performance art based on live portrayal. He added that the festival has truly great cultural significance and aims to foster relation building between artists, the public, and institutions.

Through electronic voting and public opinion, the first place prize for “Best Collective” was awarded to the statue titled “Beneath the Cape there is a Man,” presented by Katiuska Nieves Vicente, from the Dominican Republic. The second place prize for “Best Individual Portrayal” was awarded to “The Universal Angel,” by Gladys Bautista, one of the participants from Mexico.

As for the “Favorite Live Statue” category, third place was awarded to “Avatar, nature invaded,” interpreted by actor Leonel Estrella, from the Dominican Republic. The first, second, and third place winners received cash prizes in the amount of RD$40,000, RD$30,000, and RD$20,000, respectively.

The jury was made up of experienced living statue artists, such as Jochy Domínguez, Rosalba Hernández, and Donis Taveras. Additionally, as the event was being carried out, the public had the opportunity to vote for the statues that they thought best.

As for the statues’ portrayal, the main elements that the jury took into account were: wardrobe technique, statue immobility, creativity, and overall production value.

    History

Living statues have their origins in street theater and have appeared throughout history. The first recorded appearance of a living statue was in the famous La Rambla in Barcelona, Spain.
