Reinbou Declared Winner of 6th Annual Dominican Film Festival
    New York, August 2nd, 2017

During the closing ceremony of the 6th Dominican Film Festival in New York (DFFNY 2017), held in the AMC Empire 25 in Midtown Manhattan, Reinbou was granted the festival’s very first Audience Award. The DFFNY projected more than 70 films over the festival’s five days, 23 of which vied for the viewer’s choice award. At the crowded ceremony, DFFNY announced that Reinbou, from directors David Maler and Andrés Curbelo was the fan favorite and recipient of the Audience Award. Reinbou is a fresh look at the universal tale of a child who seeks the truth about the father he never knew and finally learn about himself.

The 6th Dominican Film Festival in New York presented for the first time the Audience Award and Best Short Film Award during its closing ceremony on July 30th during its closing ceremony.

During the final night of the festival, Armando Guareño, founder and director of DFFNY, received recognition from Adriano Espaillat, Dominican-American Congressman for New York’s 13th District. The Congressman highlighted Guareño’s contributions to Dominican art and culture through film and connecting them with the diaspora.

DFFNY also launched its first short film competition this year. Two categories were considered: the “Dominicans in the Diaspora,” which saw 22 entries, and “Short Films Big Stories,” which received 13 entries. Forming the judging panel were Christopher James López, actor and director, Joseph Medina, distinguished director of musical videos, and Seny Taveras, Executive Director of CUNY in The Heights. For the first category, the panel awarded first place to Andrés Farias’ Tizano, second place to Lia Chapman’s En el brazo de mi madre, and third place to Ronny Canario’s Malas decisions. The category’s special mention was given to Violeta Lockhart’s Lo que pudo haber sido. For the second category, Alexander Viola’s Azrael & Malaquías took first place while second and third places went to Rodney Llaverias’s Santo Cerro and Olga Consuegra’s Melodia en Sepia, respectively. Special mention in the category was awarded to Aulio Ivan’s Swingers.

The auditorium was filled to the brim during the closing ceremony and awards presentation followed by the New York premiere of Flor de Azúcar, the film selected by the Dominican Republic to represent the country in the 89th Academy Awards. Following the screening, the film’s director, Fernando Báez, and actor Héctor Aníbal took the stage to answer questions from the public. The closing ceremony and reception was sponsored by Ron Barceló.

The 6th version of the Dominican Film Festival in New York, held from July 25th to 30th, offered an eclectic program under the theme “We are more than merengue & bachata. We are cinema!” The festival created a platform for both new and established filmmakers from the Dominican film industry to present their projects to the public in New York. “We are very thankful for the Dominican population in New York and cinephiles in general for the support they have given to the Dominican Republic’s film industry. We feel happy with the work accomplished this year and can say with great satisfaction that this 6th version of the festival was a complete success,” declared Armando Guareño, founder and director of DFFNY.

The Dominican Film Festival in New York is organized by Cine Art Entertainment Productions in collaboration with the Dominican Republic Global Film Festival.
