Commemorating the Birthday of René del Risco Bermúdez with a Poetic Recital
    Santo Domingo, May 17, 2017.

With a poetic recital entitled “Leyendo a René del Risco” (Reading to René del Risco), the Office of the Vice President, through the Dominican Republic Children and Youth Library (BIJRD, for its acronym in Spanish) celebrated the 80th birthday of the poet, story teller and Dominican columnist, whose literary work was considered most representative of the 1960s.

The event, carried out in the Doctor Margarita Cedeño exposition room by BIJRD, included the participation of writers Leibi Ng, Hortensia Sousa de Baquero, Carmen Imbert Brugal, Ángela Hernández, Martha Rivera Garrido, Dulce Elvira de los Santos and Minerva del Risco, daughter of the deceased writer.

During the meeting, presenters recited the poems Palabras para Eurídice, Si nos atrevemos a salir, Y no importa, A veces es mejor, Este soy yo, and  Poema sin título. Additionally, they analyzed El viento frío (collection of poems, 1967), the only book published by Del Risco during his life, which exposes the reader to all the anguish experienced during the April 1965 revolution in the DR.

“It’s very important to the Vice President that new generations know the cultural legacy of the writer René del Risco, who, through his works shows his moral and social commitment to the causes of his country and people,” expressed Dulce Elvira de los Santos, director of BIJRD.

She stressed that the library, as a public institution and advocate of values that work to support youth and children, has decided to dedicate 2017 to the promotion of works by Del Risco, hand in hand with his relatives. As part of this effort, BIJRD has developed different activities, such as get-togethers with writers, discussions, conferences, competitions and publications of his stories, sonnets and free verses.

For her part, Minerva del Risco, defined her father as a cultivator of values, who never lost hope. Meanwhile, the writer Carmen Imbert Brugal categorized him as a testimonial poet that lived significant changes and events that took place in the country and the world, which makes his poetry universal.

Prior to the start of the recital, the youth choir of the library interpreted the National Anthem and highly poetic songs such as Una primavera para el mundo, authored by Del Risco.

Among the presenters in the recital were the director of the International Book Fair, Ruth Herrera; students from the Centro de Excelencia República Dominicana and from the  Liceo Sabana de Japón.

Recently, the vice president of the Dominican Republic, Doctor Margarita Cedeño, awarded the creativity, fantasy and imagination of the young winners of the fourth 2017 National Literary Bottles Competition, dedicated to René del Risco Bermúdez. The winning and final works are being displayed in the library throughout the month of May.

Additionally, in the 20th 2017 Santo Domingo International Book Fair, the Office of the Vice President dedicated its pavilion “Learning is fun” to the emblematic author.

René del Risco Bermúdez was born in San Pedro de Macorís on May 9, 1937.
