    Crowd Enjoys the Great National Carnival Parade 2017
    Santo Domingo, March 6, 2017

    With the participation of groups from the 31 provinces and the National District of the Dominican Republic, the Ministry of Culture (MINC, for its acronym in Spanish) and the National Commission of Carnival, celebrated on Sunday, March 5, the National Carnival Parade 2017, dedicated to the northwestern region of the country.

    The parade started at 4 in the afternoon and lasted until past 7 pm, and was transmitted by Digital 15, channel of the Telemicro group, sponsored by the Dominican National Brewery on behalf of Presidente beer. The parade was headed by the Queen of Carnival, Eugenia Torres (Pequita) and King Kinito Méndez.
    The Minister of culture, Pedro Vergés, who defined the Carnival as a compendium of the Dominican traditions, observed the comparsas travel from a gigantic stage located in front of the Jaragua Hotel, in George Washington Avenue.

    Accompanying the minister, the legal adviser to the Executive Branch, Flavio Darío Espinal, and the director of Infotep, Rafael Ovalles, as well as dozens of national and foreign guests.

    The parade began at 4:00 in the afternoon and closed with a flourish with a concert featuring Sergio Vargas, Mozart La Para, Don Miguelo and Chiquito Team Band, sponsored by the brand Kola Real.

    A safety unit, with approximately 2500 law enforcement officers, guarded the access routes to the National Carnival Parade 2017, that took place along the George Washington Avenue.

    Agents facilitated entry into the place and verified that people weren’t carrying firearms, sharp objects, glass containers, or consuming alcoholic beverages.
    The Organization of this major cultural event had the backing of the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Education and the National Commission of Carnival.
    In addition, the National Police, the National Directorate of investigations (DNI), the General Directorate of Prevention of the National Police, the Municipal police, the Tourist Police (POLITUR), Navy and the Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET, for its acronym in Spanish) and Comedores Ecónomicos, also supported the event.

    The parade of colorful floats started from the intersection at Máximo Gómez with George Washington, and ended at the obelisk, opposite the headquarters of the Ministry of Culture.

    On their way, the comparsas made a stop in front of the stage hosting the jury responsible for selecting the winners in the categories Best Provincial Production, Best Production of Santo Domingo, Individual Character, Mask, Special Prize, and the Grand Prize of Carnival, who received 2 billion pesos in prizes.

    The jury was coordinated by Reyes Morre Montalvo, national director of Folklore, and headed by anthropologist Virginia Roca. Carlos Andújar Peolple, Francisco Medina, Gladys Martínez and Héctor Luis Martínez, Julia Castillo, Luis Rafael Javier, Manuel Guillén, Marinella Sallent, Pedro Julio Quezada and Radhamés Polanco, were among the other members of the jury.

    The parade involved representations of San Francisco de Macorís, Hermanas Mirabal, Rio San Juan, Higuey, El Seibo, Miches, Hato Mayor, La Romana, Bayaguana, San Pedro de Macorís, Elías Piña and Barahona.

    Also from Cabral, Azua, Peravia, San Cristobal, Dajabon, Santiago Rodríguez, Montecristi, Samana, Puerto Plata, Valverde, Santiago de los Caballeros, Navarrete, La Vega, Constanza, Monseñor Nouel, National District, Santo Domingo and Boca Chica.
