    Announcing the 10th Dominican Book Fair in New York 2016

    The Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States, an organization of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, will hold the 10th edition of the Dominican Book Fairin New York from October 28 to 30 at the George Washington Public School in Manhattan.

    In celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Dominican Book Fairin New York, this year the event will be dedicated to two prominent writers of the Dominican diaspora, in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to Dominican literature in the genres of Essay and Poetry.

    The honored writers will bethe  essayist, philologist and academic Orlando Alba, based in Utah; and the poet and cultural activist Yrene Santos, who lives in New York City.

    "Dr. Orlando Alba is a renowned researcher on how to talk about Dominicans, and their philological and linguistic studies are an invaluable contribution to our culture," said Carlos Sanchez, Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States. "For her part, Yrene Santos has earned a place in the Dominican literature for the quality of her poetry and artistic and cultural activism. It is a great honor for the Commissioner to devote the 10th Dominican Book Fairin New York to Orlando Alba and Yrene Santos and we are deeply grateful they that allowed us to celebrate their contributions to our literature”, he added.

    Sánchez thanked the directors and the PTA at George Washington School "for selflessly giving up the headquarters of the school for the celebration of the fair and thus contributing to this great Dominican cultural festival".

    The 10th Dominican Book Fairin New York will be also dedicated to Dominicans writers living in the state of Virginia, the poet José Alejandro Peña and the poet and essayist ReiBerroa, and a special tribute will be payed to the writers of the Colombian community in the U.S. 

    The event, considered the most transcendental hosted by the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic outside the country through the Dominican Commissioner of Culture in the United States, will begin on Friday, October 28 in the George Washington auditorium, with a tribute to folk and popular Dominican music. 
    With the motto: "The book transforms you" the fair, visited each year by thousands of people, will offer American Spanish-speaking communities the opportunity to come into contact with the voluminous, varied and rich Dominican literature.

    The fair will have several pavilions which will be developing innovative events such as the Children's Pavilion, by writer Elizabeth Balaguer, with fun and educational activities for children; CinemaPavilion, directed by actress Mariluz Acosta, with presentations by representatives of the Dominican cinema and Crafts Pavilion, led by Mercedes Polanco, with artisans from the DR and other Latin countries.

    In addition, the Historical Memory Pavilion, by the activist Roberto Castillo, with panels and lectures on Dominican history; Expression and Youth Pavilion, directed by actress Angie Regina, where workshops, lectures and talks will be held.

    "Contest winners for literature for secondary school students will also be announced, under the coordination of writer Rubén Sánchez Félix," Sánchez said. "Our goal is to encourage these young high schoolers to cultivate the wonderful world of literature and visit and participate in the fair," he said.

    On Saturday 29 and Sunday October 30, starting at 9 am, the exhibition and sale of books and artistic and cultural activities at George Washington, located at 549 Audubon Avenue opens in Upper Manhattan, and the closing of the fair will be held on Sunday 30, at 8 pm, in the auditorium of the Dominican Cultural Commission, located at 541 West 145th street in Manhattan.

    "This festival of books and culture is a plural event where attendees will enjoy text readings, book presentations, conferences and literary discussions. We will also have physical areas for projecting the visual arts, crafts, theater, cinema, folklore, music declamation and Dominicans, "said the Commissioner.

    Sánchez reminded writers, booksellers, intellectual, artistic organizations, academic centers and cultural groups who wish to register to participate in the X Fair, the deadline expires on July 15, so he urged them to visit the website: www.codocul.com, enter the link of the book fair and fill out the entry form.

    "We invite the community to continue to support the Dominican Book Fairin New York, which is its biggest cultural festival, and writers and cultural activists to integrate volunteer, to work with us in the operational aspect" Sánchez said.
