"Our Oceans, a threatened wealth", photographic exhibition
    Santo Domingo, June 10, 2016

The exhibition "Our Oceans, a Threatened Wealth" was presented in the western corridor of the mall at the Gallery Mall 360 of the Tropigas Foundation and the RD Verde magazine as part of the celebration of World Oceans Day.

"World Oceans Day" is celebrated every June 8th, giving us the opportunity to highlight the important role the oceans play for life on earth, realizing its threats and mobilizing for its care and protection. Poor regulation, overfishing, invasive species, climate change, ocean acidification and coral bleaching are just some of the difficulties that are facing our coasts, and it becomes increasingly necessary to educate and transmit knowledge that can raise awareness and make us more responsible for our environmental actions.

This exhibition of photographs, captured by the lens of underwater photographer Guillermo Ricart, encourages taking the challenge to change, "through eight main themes that push us to respect the bans on edible marine species, promote sustainable tourism, care for coral reefs and finally, act consistently to meet the challenges ahead as an insular state.”

He also stressed that in the Dominican Republic we can find a variety of marine ecosystems, covered with unique beauty, but that are increasingly fragile and threatened.

The activity was led by the directors of the Tropigas Foundation, as well as the executives of Gallery 360, and will be open until Thursday June 30th.

    About Guillermo Ricart
A civil engineer and a native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he is a lover of photography, wildlife and marine life due to his familial upbringing. He started to dive in November 2012 and has never done it without his camera in hand. He has had the privilege to meet and photograph the seabed of most points of known diving and not so well known in the Dominican Republic, as well as marine life of Los Jardines de La Reina in Cuba, Cozumel, Akumal and Isla Mujeres, Mexico, and recently, Silver Bank, where he had the incredible experience to see the humpback whales that visit this area annually.

His experiences have led him to become involved in the conservation of our marine ecosystems, with the intention of raising awareness through his images on the importance of preserving these resources. He is the author of a book dedicated to the seabed of the Dominican Republic titled "Mar Vivo" (www.marvivord.com).
