The Dominican Republic Will Celebrate the International Day of Jazz This Saturday
    Santo Domingo, April 29, 2016

The celebration in the Dominican Republic of the International Day of Jazz will conclude on Saturday, April 30, with a program of activities that includes a number of events and concerts.

To mark this occasion, the Minister of Culture, singer and songwriter José Antonio Rodríguez recognized the importance of the celebrations that the Ministry he leads has organized in the Dominican Republic jointly with the National Commission for UNESCO.

The official underscored that the International Day of Jazz, which was established in 2011 by the General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), "is a fitting tribute to the dedication and creativity of those who forged it in the heat of the struggle for civil rights in the United States."

Rodríguez said that Jazz is considered a source of inspiration for millions of people who love freedom and who have fought for respect and human dignity. As part of the celebration, the Ministry of Culture, through UNESCO, launched a program of activities that began on April 22 and will end on Saturday, April 30. On Friday, April 29, the Corey Allen Jazz Band will perform at the Fiesta Sunset Jazz. A number of artists and producers will receive recognitions during the event, which will also be dedicated to the late musician and producer Pachy Carrasco.

Tomorrow, Saturday, April 30, several concerts will be held at Fedujazz. Sandy Gabriel will perform in Cabarete, Puerto Plata, and the Pop Jazz Ensemble, the Big Band of the National Conservatory of Music, will perform in the National District.

The celebration of the International Day of Jazz is led by Irina Bokova, Director General of UNESCO, together with the legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, UNESCO’s Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

On the night of April 30, Washington, D.C., will be the venue for the All-Star Global Concert, which will feature performances by dozens of internationally renowned Jazz stars. This concert will be broadcast live throughout the world via the web sites of UNESCO, the United States Department of State and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

The Dominican Republic has been celebrating this great festival since 2012, and this year it joined 190 other countries from all continents in celebrating "Una semana de puro Jazz" (A week of pure Jazz).
