    The Sirve Quisqueya Network Marked the Global Youth Service Day Through the 14th National Volunteer Fair
    Santo Domingo, April 13, 2016

    The Sirve Quisqueya Network held the 14th National Youth Volunteer Fair, under the theme "Sustainable Development Goals."

    This fair took place in the framework of the Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), with the aim of promoting volunteer opportunities to contribute to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals that seek to eradicate poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all, as part of a new development agenda.

    The 14th National Youth Volunteer Fair was held as part of the activities of the project Support to Facilitate the Participation of Civil Society of the CARIFORUM-Dominican Republic in the Development and Regional Integration Process, which is being implemented by Alianza ONG with the support of the European Union and in the framework of a financing agreement signed with CARIFORUM.

    Mallerlyn Lizardo, projects technician from Alianza ONG, welcomed the attendees and presented a summary of the volunteer activities contained in the Civil Society-CARIFORUM Project.

    In turn, Luca Lo Conte, programs officer from the European Union, stressed the interest of his organization in supporting cooperation for development. "The EU is the largest contributor of aid for development in the world. We support volunteerism and are interested in working not only with governments, but also with a more strengthened Dominican civil society. This is one of the goals that this project seeks," he said.

    During the opening ceremony, the following persons took the floor: Volunteer Yair Reyes, representing Sirve Quisqueya; Adrian Stewart Roa, of Liderazgo Social y Político en Pro de la Juventud (LAZOS); and, Victor Ángel Cuello, technical assistant to the Vice-rectory of University Extension at the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

    Those attending the 14th National Youth Volunteer Fair participated in the lectures that were offered throughout the day, including: Leadership and the SDGs: Towards 2030, and Social Entrepreneurship, among others.

    Art was also highlighted at the 14th National Youth Volunteer Fair with the presentation of the Mobile Theatre, Jean Films, the UASD’s Popular Musical Vocal Group, and Children International.

    Among the organizations participating in the fair were: ASODIFIMO, the Jean Films Acting Academy, the Dominican Firefighters Academy, AIESEC, Alianza ONG, Tú Mujer Association, Voluntary Action, Children International, CIMUDIS, Dominican Red Cross, Civil Defense, Progressing with Solidarity (Prosoli), GFDD/Funglode, SERVIR-D, Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation, Dominican Solidarity, LAZOS, Empowered Youth, TECHO, UNFPA, the Directorate General of Border Development’s Youth Service, Mobile Theater, and others.

    This fair was sponsored by Blue Planet Water, Molinos Modernos and Prosoli.

    This activity takes place in more than 135 countries through service projects run by young people. This event recognizes the positive impact that young people have in their communities throughout the year.

    Sirve Quisqueya, is a network of organizations working since 2001 on the promotion and recognition of voluntary youth work in the Dominican Republic. It is made of Alianza ONG, the Economics and Business Students Association (AIESEC), the Counselling and Integral Research Center (COIN), Rotaract Clubs, the Dominican Red Cross (DRC), Social Innovation and Voluntary Action Organization, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, Pastoral Juvenil, the United Nations Volunteers Program (UNV), the Dominican Network of University Volunteering (REDOVU), the National Youth Network (RNJ), Habitat for Humanity and Service for Peace Dominican Republic (SPP).
