Ministry of the Environment Implements a New Plan for the Cleaning of Coasts and Beaches
    Santo Domingo, April 12, 2016

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources reported Tuesday a plan for strengthening the Beaches and Coasts Cleaning Permanent Program at national level with the aim of protecting coastal ecosystems and keeping them optimal for visitors.

The initiative, by the Vice Ministry of Marine and Coastal Resources, is intended, in addition, to strengthen the consciousness of citizenship in relation to their own role in the balance of the planet.

In this regard, staff of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources together with the Green World Foundation and about 125 students of the APEC Centers of Distance Education (CENAPEC for its acronym in Spanish) conducted a day of cleaning in Playa del Fuerte de San Gil, in the national district where 492 trash bags of non-recyclable waste, especially foam material, were collected. They also recovered 126 bags of recyclable plastic waste, such as plastic bottles, gallons, caps, among others; and 3 bags with bottles and pieces of glass.

The official institution stressed the importance that this dynamic is not limited to special celebrations such as the World Coastal Cleanup Day, but that the idea is to raise people’s awareness so they understand that only by preserving natural resources they can endure in time for the enjoyment of future generations. This initiative urges public and private institutions and civil society to participate and include within their social responsibility programs days of beach cleaning, as well as reforestation plans to contribute to the preservation of water, which is vital for life.

The Vice Ministry of Marine and Coastal resources, directed by Idalia Acevedo Monegro, also carries out a program of permanent monitoring of beaches and sea coastlines including the planting of endemic and native trees, to contribute to water preservation that is essential for life. In the National District, some of places cleaned include Güibia Beach, Montesinos, Manresa and la Playita, places that have been supported so far by organizations like the Ozama Green Foundation and Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña
