The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library announces Library Research Grants
    New York, January 15, 2015

The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library is pleased to announce its first Summer Library Travel Research Award.
Applications are due on March 16, 2015 by 5pm.

The purpose of the Summer Library Travel Research Award is to enable faculty researchers from colleges and universities across the globe to take advantage of the unique resources of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library collections. The CUNY DSI will provide three awards of $3,000 to help grantees defray travel and housing costs in New York City.

Awardees are expected to remain in New York City for at least two weeks and, following their stay, submit a brief (2-3 pp.) report on how their work at the CUNY DSI Library enriched their research project and offer suggestions for improvements on the Library’s collections. Proposed research may be conducted any time between June 1, 2015 and July 30, 2015. Any publications resulting from research undertaken during the award period should acknowledge CUNY DSI for its support. The CUNY DSI Travel Review Committee will award the grants based on the relevance of the proposal to the unique holdings of the CUNY DSI Library, the merits and significance of the project, and the applicant’s scholarly qualifications. Applicants can hail from any college or university in the world, given they have proper documentation to reside in the U.S. for a month, hold permanent residency status, or are U.S. citizens.

The CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Library is highly specialized, as it contains one of the finest collections of Dominican-related materials in the United States. It consists of over 5,000 volumes, including books, journals, manuscripts, dissertations, among others, many of which are rare. The Library has a one-of-a-kind audiovisual collection of documentaries, TV programs, news segments, music performances, and films, as well as recordings of conferences organized by the Institute. It also contains one of the largest collections of materials related to the Spanish colonial period in the Dominican Republic, as well as literary works written by Dominican authors living in the United States, many self-published and donated by the authors. The Library also holds materials related to Dominican artists in the United States. We have a singular journal collection containing approximately 8,000 citations to individual articles in publications such as Rumbo, Estudios Sociales, a continuously published leading Dominican journal in the field of social science, and Punto 7 Journal, one of the first academic/literary journals published by Dominicans living in New York City. To peruse the collection, please visit our catalogue: http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/dsi/library-online-catalog.cfm and for a list of our audiovisual materials: http://www.ccny.cuny.edu/dsi/library-film-video-audio-collection.cfm
